Ron Howard's 'Rush' to Get Exclusive Openings in New York and Los Angeles

The studio is planning Sept. 20 engagements on both coasts before the movie goes wide a week later.

Universal Pictures is putting its foot on the gas for Ron Howard’s Rush. The studio announced Thursday that the racing movie, scheduled to open wide in the United States on Sept. 27, will open in exclusive engagements one week earlier on Sept. 20 in New York and Los Angeles.

The film, which re-unites Howard with Frost/Nixon screenwriterPeter Morgan, recreates the 1970s rivalry between James Hunt, played by Chris Hemsworth, and Niki Lauda, portrayed by Daniel Bruhl, who clashed on the Grand Prix racetrack.  

The film also is scheduled to play the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 5 to 15.

Rush also stars Olivia Wilde and Alexandra Maria Lara. It is produced by Andrew Eaton, Eric Fellner, Brian Oliver, Brian Grazer and Morgan and executive produced by Cross Creek Pictures, Exclusive Media, Tim Bevan and Todd Hallowell.
